2007 - WeGotSoccer & Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Partnership
American Cancer Society and WeGotSoccer Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

The American Cancer Society has welcomed WeGotSoccer of Raynham, Massachusetts as a new flagship corporate sponsor of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  Flagship sponsors for the 2007 event also include AstraZeneca, BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts, and H.P. Hood.  Media sponsors are 7 News on 7NBC, CW56 and MAGIC 106.7FM.

Along with their support of Boston’s 15th Anniversary walk, WeGotSoccer hosted a fundraiser on July 17th for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event featured the opportunity to meet U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team members Kristine Lilly and Heather O’Reilly.  Lilly is also a member of the newly re-formed Boston Breakers.  More than 50 people attended the fundraiser, held at Porticello’s Ristorante in Easton, which included dinner and a silent auction.  WeGotSoccer owner, Michael O’Connor presented a check that evening to American Cancer Society staff in the amount of $17,475 which will benefit the Society’s programs of breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services.

According to the Society, breast cancer will strike more than 180,000 women and men this year, and claim nearly 41,000 lives. With the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life about 1 in 7, knowledge of early detection measures, treatment options, and risk factors are essential.  Corporations across the state are taking steps to heighten breast cancer awareness and advance the pace of progress against the disease by serving as flagship sponsors for the 15th annual event.

“WeGotSoccer has made breast cancer a priority by supporting Making Strides,” according to Donna Iampieri, Director of Boston’s Making Strides for the Society.  “The company is dedicated to working alongside the American Cancer Society to make significant progress in saving lives and for that we are deeply grateful.”

WeGotSoccer has been servicing and providing everything soccer to youth groups, clubs, towns, professional teams, schools, and families across the country for the past 15 years. Soccer has been the fastest growing youth sport in the United States over the past decade and WeGotSoccer has grown to support that growth at all levels while becoming one of the top Soccer Specialty dealers in the country. Our close connection to the grass-roots level of soccer affords us the opportunity to forge strong relationships with soccer playing families all across the country.

“We are honored to be involved with the many thousands of people who work with and for the ACS – all of  whom are passionate about supporting those who are fighting cancer and committed to working together to help  find a cure for this disease that has touched so many of our lives. Our goal in aligning with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is to expose and mobilize our extensive network of families, many touched by breast cancer, in support of this cause,” said owner Michael O’Connor.

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a five-mile, noncompetitive walk, is set to take place on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston.  The event is the nation’s oldest and largest one-day walk, raising more than $33 million to fight breast cancer since its inception in 1993. In 2006, nearly 40,000 walkers raised $3.2 million.  Making Strides pledges are dedicated to the Society’s life-saving programs of breast cancer research, education, advocacy and patient support.
The Society has invested more in breast cancer research grants over time than any other voluntary public health organization; more than $322 million since 1972.  In Massachusetts, there are currently 28 Society funded breast cancer grants totaling more than $12 million.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
